Another
of Abbotsford’s annual Mill Lake 8k’s got underway
this year with the weather holding off and a better than
average turnout. The 2005 men’s and women’s overall
trophy winners were Abbotsford’s 20-29 age group leader
Darcy Lainchbury (26:31) and Deerfoot Athletic Club’s
30-39 head of the class Kim Jones (30:01). The leading 40+
masters athletes of the day were Abbotsford’ s Irm
Nickel’s 35:09 for the women and Rob Lang’s 28:15 for
the men.
The
men’s under-16 age group had a spirited group of youths
covering the distance with Greg Braun, Ryan Couperus and
Ryan Lymburner all running 37:15 in that order. Following
them in were Austin Lymburner and Nathan Dann with times
of 46:27 and 47:46.
Trailing
Lainchbury home were Abbotsford Valley Royals runner and
Daffodil Dash 5k winner Ken Williams (26:55) for second.
SFU Burnaby athlete Tyler Baruta (27:24) - who was part of
the leading trio in the race - until the 5k mark when
Lainchbury put the pressure on and began pulling away for
his convincing win, finished third.

In
the women’s 20-29 race, local talent Darci
Arsene ran a 30:52 leader followed by Helen Stacy,
Chilliwack’s Jennifer Bale, and Sonya Gronberg
In
the hotly contested 40-49 grouping Surrey’s Rob Lang and
Mission’s Mike Ross had a seesaw battle going until the
end where Lang’s 28:15 prevailed over Ross’ 28:19.
Mark Nemethy, another local athlete, garnered third place
with his 28:57. Pat Rachon (33:00) and recent Vancouver
International Marathon competitor John Griffith (34:39)
rounded out the Top 5 for this age group.
Following
Irm Nickel across the line in the women’s 40-49 section
of the race were Aldergrove’s Vikki Hopes and Jane Welsh
with times of 38:28 and 44:52.
Mission’s
Norm Angell (30:24) led the 50-54’s taking the gold
medal over Langley’s Scott Stewart and Abby’s Doug
Warner.
For
the women (50-54) Donna Arsene took first place matching
her daughter as a winner for the day running 41:18 to
Betty-Joan Traverse’s 41:37, and the not too far behind
Lyn Veenhof in 42:14.
In
the 60 plus men’s race Vancouver’s Rob Daniel (37:38)
was good enough to hold off Burnaby’s Ron Eeles and
Langley’s Karl Schoonen.
For
the 60 plus women’s entrants Joyce Metcalfe from
Mission, who was just back from the famous Boston
Marathon, ran 38:09.
Oldest
runner of the day honors went to Abbotsford’s Ray
Rousseau in the 70+ division with his gallant
knee-bandaged 44:39 effort.
Other
age group winners for the day were Philippe Traverse
(17-19) going 33:11 and Edwin De Gier in the 30-39 age
group running a 30:18.
