2005 MILL LAKE 8K - May 21st

by Myron Neville

Another of Abbotsford’s annual Mill Lake 8k’s got underway this year with the weather holding off and a better than average turnout. The 2005 men’s and women’s overall trophy winners were Abbotsford’s 20-29 age group leader Darcy Lainchbury (26:31) and Deerfoot Athletic Club’s 30-39 head of the class Kim Jones (30:01). The leading 40+ masters athletes of the day were Abbotsford’ s Irm Nickel’s 35:09 for the women and Rob Lang’s 28:15 for the men.

The men’s under-16 age group had a spirited group of youths covering the distance with Greg Braun, Ryan Couperus and Ryan Lymburner all running 37:15 in that order. Following them in were Austin Lymburner and Nathan Dann with times of 46:27 and 47:46.

Trailing Lainchbury home were Abbotsford Valley Royals runner and Daffodil Dash 5k winner Ken Williams (26:55) for second. SFU Burnaby athlete Tyler Baruta (27:24) - who was part of the leading trio in the race - until the 5k mark when Lainchbury put the pressure on and began pulling away for his convincing win, finished third.

]           In the women’s 20-29 race, local talent Darci  Arsene ran a 30:52 leader followed by Helen Stacy, Chilliwack’s Jennifer Bale, and Sonya Gronberg

In the hotly contested 40-49 grouping Surrey’s Rob Lang and Mission’s Mike Ross had a seesaw battle going until the end where Lang’s 28:15 prevailed over Ross’ 28:19. Mark Nemethy, another local athlete, garnered third place with his 28:57. Pat Rachon (33:00) and recent Vancouver International Marathon competitor John Griffith (34:39) rounded out the Top 5 for this age group.

Following Irm Nickel across the line in the women’s 40-49 section of the race were Aldergrove’s Vikki Hopes and Jane Welsh with times of 38:28 and 44:52.

Mission’s Norm Angell (30:24) led the 50-54’s taking the gold medal over Langley’s Scott Stewart and Abby’s Doug Warner.

For the women (50-54) Donna Arsene took first place matching her daughter as a winner for the day running 41:18 to Betty-Joan Traverse’s 41:37, and the not too far behind Lyn Veenhof in 42:14.

In the 60 plus men’s race Vancouver’s Rob Daniel (37:38) was good enough to hold off Burnaby’s Ron Eeles and Langley’s Karl Schoonen.

For the 60 plus women’s entrants Joyce Metcalfe from Mission, who was just back from the famous Boston Marathon, ran 38:09.

Oldest runner of the day honors went to Abbotsford’s Ray Rousseau in the 70+ division with his gallant knee-bandaged 44:39 effort.

Other age group winners for the day were Philippe Traverse (17-19) going 33:11 and Edwin De Gier in the 30-39 age group running a 30:18.
